TULAMBEN DIVE SITE

U.S.A.T. LIBERTY

Depth: 8-30m / All levels / Access from Shore / Easy wreck diving, corals and lots of fishes.

The 120 meter long USAT Liberty wreck is a must see. The site is said to be the safest large wreck dive in the world. The USAT Liberty was a United States Army Transport cargo ship torpedoed by a Japanese submarine in January 1942 in the Lombok straits and towed back to the beach in Tulamben for salvaging where it was left as the war effort moved on. In 1963, Mount Agung’s eruption moved the ship off the beach, and the Liberty’s wreck is now a popular dive site. She is lying on her side at a depth ranging from 8 to 30 meters. It’s one of the most popular dives sites in Bali so it can get crowded in the high season.

CORAL GARDEN

Depth: 3-25 m / All Levels / Access from Shore / Protected waters, coral, critters, reef sharks.

The Coral Garden ranges from 2 to 15 m. Hard and soft coral carpets the ground as well as a field of anemones. The beautiful blue-yellow ribbon eel has found a home here. This dive site is a superb snorkelling spot with none to moderate current. Squid and cuttlefish are just a few of the thousands of animals found here. Small black tip reef sharks are often spotted in the shallows.

DROP OFF

Depth: 8-40m / All levels with good buoyancy / Access from Shore / None to moderate current / Octopus, scorpion fish, occasional pelagic animals.

To the right of the coral garden, the slopes drop off quite rapidly making for an exceptional wall dive. Hiding in the rocks and coral formations you will find octopus and scorpions fish aplenty and the occasional pelagic pops up from the blue. The shallow top of the drop off makes for a colourful return journey.

KUBU WRECK & MONKEY REEF

Depth: 15-40 m / Advanced Divers / Access from shore / Wreck penetration / Big fish.

Located in Kubu Village, the so-called ‘Kubu Wreck’ can be reached in 10 minutes by car from the Liberty wreck dive site. In 2012, a 45 meter weather patrol ship was purposely sunk to make this site. Despite the lack of coral growth, this is an exciting wreck dive. Standing upright, the ship is full of fun artefacts, a safari car you can have your picture taken in, suitcases full of Buddha statues and the old helm you can pose at for fun pictures. The surrounding reef is beautiful and you may encounter wandering reef sharks.

BATU KELEBIT

Depth: 5-40 m / Advanced Divers / Access by boat only / Big sponges / Pelagic animals.

Batu Kelebit is a pinnacle. This sloping mound ends in a series of deep finger reefs fed by cold water currents keeping the coral here rich and healthy. These currents can be quite strong. The deep reefs are covered in coral growth similar to that found in Nusa Penida with beautiful sea fans and orange soft corals. It slopes onto a white sandy bottom, where white tip reef sharks sometimes rest. This is the site in Tulamben where big pelagic animals have been reported.

SERAYA SECRETS

Depth: 2-20 m / All Divers / Access from shore / Muck dive / Photographers’ dream.

Sandy rocky slope with little coral but lots of small critters (harlequin and other shrimps), which makes it a great muck dive. You’ll also find lion-fish, bat-fish and ribbon eels and dome-shaped metal structures. Great dive site for macro photography.

AMED DIVE SITE

LIPAH BAY

Depth: 3-21m / All Levels / Access from Shore / Protected waters, coral, critters, sandy slope.

Just behind the diving centre is Lipah Bay. This is a great site for snorkellers, for discovering scuba diving or new divers wanting to develop their skills in calm, clear waters. Advanced photographers looking for strange critters will also love this site. Look out for lion fish, moray eels, small frog-fish, leaf scorpion fish, ornate ghost pipe-fish, mimic octopus, seahorses… The reef is very healthy and colourful, it’s like a giant aquarium only a few meters away from the shore.

BUNUTAN

Depth: 6-35m / Advanced Divers / Access by boat / Slope / Garden eels, Big fish, gorgonians, good visibility / Moderate to strong current.

One of the prettiest dive sites in Amed. It takes 10 minutes from our dive shop by local outrigger or Jukung to get to the dive site. You drop down onto a gigantic eel garden, following the gentle slope you find huge sponges, blue spotted stingrays, beautiful pink gorgonians, morays, giant barracudas, pygmy seahorses, unbelievable quantities of reef fish and, frequently, black tip reef shark.

JAPANESE SHIPWRECK

Depth: 2-30 m / All levels / Access from shore / Small wreck & coral dive / Staghorn corals / Possible currents.

Just a few meters away from the shore, in shallow water, lies a 20 meter long shipwreck fully covered with healthy soft and hard corals suitable for all levels of divers and for snorkellers. The reef behind the shipwreck is one of the most colourful and healthiest reefs around the Amed area. This site has much to offer for experienced divers too, such as leaf scorpion fish, mantis shrimp and small critters. Other predators tend to hang out around the wreck, attracted by the swarms of tiny fish.

JEMELUK BAY & WALL

Depth: 1-21 m / All Divers / Access from shore or boat / Easy snorkelling and beach diving in a protected bay or dive along the drop off (5/40 m).

There are two dives in Jemeluk. The protected bay offers easy snorkelling, beach diving and some artificial reefs as well as a beautiful coral garden. One of the good spots to find ghost pipe-fish, bat-fish glide between the statues and you’ll find plenty of scorpion fish. Schools of big mouth mackerels patrol the area. The wall is a dive in clear water along a steep drop off (80 m). Carried by the gentle current, divers are astonished by the abundance of fish life from macro size to bigger ones and the huge pink gorgonian fan corals.

PYRAMIDS

Depth: 5-22 m / All Divers / Access by boat or shore / Slope / Garden eels, stingrays, frog-fish, pygmy seahorses / Good for photography / Artificial reef / Possible current & drift dive.

Several pyramid-shaped concrete structures on a sandy bottom form lovely artificial reefs around 20 m. The local community placed those open-block structures here in the early 1990’s as fish aggregation devices. The pyramids are coated in marine growth and many have become cleaning stations for passing fish such as snappers, sweetlips and surgeons. A natural Coral reef from 5 m to 18 m borders the area. It’s possible to see critters like pygmy seahorse, leaf scorpion fish, frog-fish and turtles. Some current may occur depending on the tides.
